This course covers fundamental equations of electromagnetic fields, boundary conditions, and theorems of uniqueness and reciprocity. The propagation of electromagnetic wave in homogeneous and layered media and surface waves are discussed. Eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are studied and phase/group velocity relations are derived. Green functions are discussed, and electromagnetic fields produced by dipoles in homogeneous media are derived. Floquet’s theorem and spatial harmonics are studied, and waves scattered by periodic structures are discussed. Anisotropic and bi-anisotropic media are presented and metamaterials and their applications for subwavelength focusing and the design of perfect lenses are studied.
